Points Rummy

Points Rummy

There are a lot of different variants of Rummy, and one of them is Points Rummy. It is, in fact, a popular version of the 13 Card Rummy and is also known as Strikes Rummy. Point Rummy game is the most fast-paced out of the three variants of Rummy. The other two notable versions of Rummy are Deals Rummy and Pool Rummy.

Now, let's see how the Points Rummy game is different from the classic version of Rummy. If players know about the Rummy point system and its rules, then it is relatively simple for them to get accustomed to Points Rummy’s system. The secret is to play Rummy first and get habituated with the classic Points Rummy.

Points Rummy Rules

1. The Points Rummy game is played with 2 to 6 players. Each player is, initially, given 13 cards after shuffling. There is a toss to decide who will commence the game. The player who starts the game picks a card from the closed deck and adds it to their open deck. To finish a move, the players must pick a card, add it to their deck, and throw another in the discard pile called the Stock.

2. If the same set of players drop the game or refuse to make a move thrice, they get eliminated. The first drop in the game could get you 20 points as a penalty; the middle drop in the game gets you 40 points; finally, the full count, i.e., dropping the game the third time, will get you 80 points. A fun fact - The drop option is only applicable in the Pool and Points Rummy system.

3. This game is unique as the goal of the players is to get the least points. The player with 0 points is the winner. Similarly, the player that loses has the highest point and is eliminated. Their points are equal to the value of the card(s) that is with them.

4. Each face card - the Ace, King, Queen, and Joker is generally 10 points. The cards with numbers on them are of the same value as the number mentioned on them.

5. Another important thing to note is that a point won is inversely proportional to the number of chips won. This means that the winning players receive the most amount of chips while getting the least amount of points.

6. The losing player gets 80 points only, not a point higher. Even if the score exceeds that number, it would still be capped at 80.

7. The Point Rummy game lasts for only a deal, and that’s because it's a fast-paced game.

8. The game is played with two decks. One deck includes 54 cards, including the Joker.

9. The winner’s cards must create a sequence or set.

A sequence is a group of 3 cards of the same suit, or they could be more than three. They could be in a mathematical order, like an ace, 2, and 3 and so on.

A set is a maximum of 4 cards. A set could be categorized as valid and invalid. A valid set means it has the same value but in different suits. Like four Aces that are different from each other because one's an ace of hearts, another one's an ace of diamonds and so on. To avoid making an invalid set, the players cannot use cards of the same suit.

So, as we can see, the scoring and rules of Points Rummy game and the classic Rummy are similar, with some exceptions. All other Points Rummy rules are the same as classic Rummy, which includes showing, melds, and pure and impure sequences.
